The day itself

Start before first light on the forest edge above Meemure and work the ridge trails as the canopy wakes up. We target Sri Lanka's endemic highland birds — whistling thrush, yellow-eared bulbul and the elusive scaly thrush — with scopes set up at three reliable clearings. The pace is gentle, the stops are frequent, and every sighting is logged for the national bird atlas.
